After 1973 the rate shown is the typical
posted rate from the last Wednesday in the
month. Prior to 1973 the conventional
mortgage rate shown is a simple average
of rates charged by the majority of large
institutional lenders, including chartered
banks, for residential mortgage loans as of
mid-month.
Between 1967 and 1970 the average rate shown includes rates for twenty-five year mortgages. All data is courtesy of the Bank of Canada.
Since 2000 the rates have dropped even lower. As you can see, we are enjoying a time of exceptionally good rates!
